There is silence in the desert

the silence of a hard, hot wind
the silence of blowing sand and dust
the silence of a man's thoughts
crashing in upon him

the eternal silence of the grave
the eternal silence of that other world
after death
before birth
beyond our ken

the silence of a man turning in upon himself
to face the sand, sky,
and hot wind

blowing away all that is not eternal
